Which ladder is needed for which application?

Ladders are indispensable in many areas. They are used to overcome heights and provide access to areas that are difficult to reach. The applications of ladders are manifold. They are used in all industries as well as in private use. There are different types of ladders for different applications. These include everything from the classic step ladder or household ladder to leaning ladders, extension ladders and multi-purpose ladders, as well as specialized ladders that often meet job-specific requirements.
In addition to the type of ladder, whether it should be a ladder with rungs or a step ladder also plays a role in the selection process. The material is also important. Most ladders are made of aluminum. But you can also find ladders made of wood, steel or GRP.

What should be considered regarding the material when choosing a ladder?

When choosing a ladder, the right material is crucial, as it affects the stability, safety, durability and applicability of the ladder. Here are some important points to consider:

1. Purpose of use

Depending on what the ladder is used for, the material may vary. For indoor use, different materials are often preferred than for outdoor or industrial environments.

2. Weight

The weight of the ladder is an important factor for handling and transportability. Lighter materials such as aluminum are easier to move than heavier materials such as steel.

3. Stability

The stability of the ladder is essential to prevent accidents. The material must be sufficiently stable to support the weight of the user and, if necessary, additional weight, such as tools or materials.

4. Slip resistance

The material of the ladder steps should have a non-slip surface to ensure safety during ascent and descent, especially in damp or wet conditions.

5. Corrosion resistance

Especially for outdoor use or in humid environments, the corrosion resistance of the material is important to extend the life of the conductors.

6. Durability

The material chosen should be durable and able to withstand wear and tear over time and with regular use.

7. Insulation

In certain environments where electrical safety is a concern, a non-conductive conductor (e.g. fiberglass) is required to prevent electrical accidents.

Common materials for ladders are:

  1. Aluminum: Lightweight, corrosion resistant and durable. Ideal for general indoor and outdoor use.
  2. Steel: Very strong and robust, often used in industrial environments. However, can be heavier and susceptible to corrosion.
  3. GRP: Non-conductive, ideal for use near electrical equipment. Corrosion resistant and lightweight.
  4. Wood: Traditional material used in many environments. However, may be susceptible to rotting and deformation, especially in damp conditions.

Which ladder foot is needed for which surface?

Choosing the right ladder foot depends on several factors, including the surface on which the ladder will be placed and its intended use. Here are some common types of ladder feet and in which substrates they are best suited:

  • Rubber or plastic caps: Rubber or plastic caps are non-slip and gentle on the surface. They are well suited for use on smooth surfaces such as tile or wood floors. They also minimize the risk of damage to the floor.
  • Spikes or claws: These feet have tips or claws that can penetrate soft surfaces such as earth, grass or gravel. They provide additional stability and prevent the ladder from slipping away on uneven ground.
  • Steel caps: Steel caps on the ladder feet are particularly robust and can be used on various substrates such as concrete or asphalt surfaces. They are resistant to abrasion and wear.
  • Telescopic feet: These feet can be adjusted in height to compensate for uneven ground. They are particularly useful when the ladder is used on uneven terrain or on stairs.
  • Suction cups or suction feet: These feet use negative pressure to attach to smooth surfaces such as glass or tile. They provide a firm grip and are often found in specialized applications.

What guidelines must be followed when working with a ladder?

For the highest possible safety and optimum health protection in your daily work practice, compliance with the Technical Rules for Industrial Safety is very important. By observing these rules, you fulfill the requirements of the Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health. In the revised version of TRBS 2121 Part 2, innovations are relevant that primarily affect rung ladders, ladders as traffic routes and ladders as elevated workplaces.

Handling tools such as hammers, drills or saws in elevated positions involves certain risks. However, to ensure the highest possible level of safety, even during physically demanding activities, a firm footing is essential for both the ladder and the person working. The following applies: The worker must be able to stand firmly with both feet on a step or platform.

  • The standing height may be a maximum of 2 m. For temporary work (up to a period of two hours per work shift), a height of up to 5 m is permissible.
  • The use of other, safer work equipment is not proportionate due to low hazard and low duration of use.
  • The risk assessment must show that the entry and exit can be carried out safely.

Regular inspection of ladders is equally important. It contributes to the safety of employees and reduces the risk of accidents. Proper inspection of ladders ensures that they meet the technical requirements and are in a safe condition.

In Germany, ladders are inspected in accordance with DGUV Rule 208-016 and the German Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health (BetrSichV). According to these regulations, regular testing by a competent person is required annually.

Inspect your ladders and steps regularly and document the inspections performed easily and quickly in the digital ladder inspection book in the HK-Inspect app. The digital ladder inspection supports you in your inspection and documentation obligations and ensures a paperless process.
