PERIODIC TESTING OF THE HARDNESS TESTERS
Periodic testing is an important part of the monitoring of hardness testing equipment within the quality management system and must be carried out and documented in accordance with DIN EN ISO 6506 (metallic materials; Brinell hardness testing), DIN EN ISO 6507 (metallic materials; Vickers hardness testing), DIN EN ISO 6508 (metallic materials; Rockwell hardness testing) and DIN EN ISO 4545 (metallic materials; Knoop hardness testing) as well as ASTM with calibrated and certified hardness reference blocks.
To avoid a possible systematic measurement deviation, the test parameters are to be taken from the corresponding certificate. Without a certificate, hardness reference blocks are practically useless. This check is required after every change of machine settings, e.g. after changing the test method or the indenter. Furthermore, at least one or two test indentations per hardness range and hardness scale are specified (working) daily. Documentation is prescribed by standards or at least strongly recommended, since the verification of the documentation of the results of the periodic test is usually part of an audit. For further information, please refer to the corresponding, currently valid standard documents.
