WIDIA: Products that are as "hard as a diamond"
As diamond is a highly resistant but expensive material, there needed to be a new alternative that could replace it. This led to the development of sintered carbide. In this process, the raw material is extracted from tungsten ore and pulverised, with cobalt as the binding agent. The carbonised powder undergoes a wet blasting process before being spray-dried and compressed into a green part. This blank is sintered in a furnace, then ground and coated as necessary so that the carbide is protected against wear. The world's first alloys made from cemented carbide based on tungsten carbide were produced this way beginning in 1926. By 1935, the range had been expanded to include carbide tools and tips for use in tool equipment.
