At what volume do I need to wear hearing protection?

To prevent tinnitus or complete loss of hearing, hearing protection must be provided from a daily noise exposure level of 80 dB or a peak sound pressure level of 135 dB. From a daily noise exposure level of 85 dB or a peak sound pressure level of 137 dB, hearing protection must be worn in accordance with DGUV 112-194.
In general, the noise range to be aimed for according to sound attenuation under hearing protection is between 70 and 80 dB.

HOW LONG MUST I WEAR MY HEARING PROTECTION?

In noisy environments it is essential that hearing protection is worn 100%, as even short breaks in wearing will lead to a significant loss of protection.

WHAT IS THE RIGHT HEARING PROTECTION FOR ME?

The first step in choosing the right hearing protection is to determine the noise exposure at the workplace. In the second step, the personal preferences and other personal protective equipment of the wearer should be taken into account.

Checks of the actual protective effect of hearing protectors show that the attenuation values achieved during testing are usually not achieved in practice. For this reason, the following correction values must be considered when selecting suitable hearing protection:

  • Preformed disposable ear plugs: 9 dB
  • Preformed reusable ear plugs: 5 dB
  • Banded ear plugs: 5 dB
  • Capsule ear protection: 5 dB

In other words, if the noise level is 100 dB and the worker wants to use banded  ear plugs, you should choose ear plugs with a sound attenuation value of at least 25 dB. Then, taking into account the correction value, the worker's hearing is exposed to a noise level of max. 80 dB.
It is important to ensure that neither under- nor over-protection takes place. Dangers of underprotection are long-term, irreversible hearing damage, whereas overprotection leads to comprehension problems and isolation.

What are earmolds?

Earmolds are the individual solution for every ear. They are individually adapted to the wearer's ear and at the same time offer the best possible protection at a noisy workplace.

We offer a wide range of hearing protection earmolds made of different materials, in different designs and with variable attenuation effects. The service life of an individual earmold is around 5 years, so that a hearing protection earmold not only offers optimum protection, but is also very sustainable.

Our Industrial Safety consultants will be happy to advise you on professional and flexible solutions, individually tailored to the requirements of your company. Please contact your HAHN+KOLB representative or send us your inquiry by email.
